Most French motorways (autoroutes) are toll roads. At the toll gate you pay by credit card. Choose a lane with the card symbol or the green arrow; the orange lane marked "t" is only for cars with a toll badge. Expect to pay about €10 per 100 km of motorway.
Watch out on motorways without toll gates. On the A13 and A14 between Paris and Normandy and on the A79 in central France, a camera registers your number plate. If your rental car has no toll badge, you pay online yourself within 72 hours. If you forget, a fine follows via the rental company.
Cities such as Paris, Lyon and Grenoble have a low-emission zone (ZFE). There you need a Crit'Air sticker on the windscreen. French rental cars are usually new and already have the sticker. Check at pick-up that it is on the windscreen.
In France "gazole" means diesel, not petrol. Petrol is called SP95, SP95-E10 or SP98. Before filling up, always check the fuel cap to see which fuel the rental car needs. Supermarkets such as Leclerc, Carrefour and Intermarché are often the cheapest places to fill up, the autoroute the most expensive.
You do not need a car in Paris itself: traffic is heavy, parking is expensive and 30 km/h applies almost everywhere. Better to pick up the car at Charles de Gaulle or Orly and head straight out of the city. Within one to three hours you are in Champagne, at the châteaux of the Loire or on the Normandy coast.
Nice is the most popular airport for picking up a car in the south of France. You drive to Cannes or Monaco in about half an hour, and in about two hours you reach the lavender fields of Provence, which bloom around July. More about tolls, stickers and speed limits in car rental in France.
At a regular toll gate you pay by credit card. On motorways without toll gates, such as the A13 and A14, you pay online within 72 hours, unless your rental car has a toll badge. Ask about it at pick-up.
Often yes, as long as it is in your rental contract in advance. There is usually a surcharge. Mention your route in your request and we will include it in your quote. Read also taking a rental car across the border.
Yes. At pick-up the rental company holds a deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name. A credit card is also the easiest option at toll gates and at unstaffed petrol stations at night.
With SunnVio you drive with zero excess. If the rental company keeps an amount from your deposit after damage, we pay it back in full within 30 days.
