On Crete you usually pick up the car in Heraklion or Chania. The main road along the north coast connects the larger towns, and there are no tolls anywhere on the island. Allow extra time for trips to the south coast: the mountain roads are beautiful, but narrow and winding.
Heading to a remote beach such as Balos? The last stretch is a dirt road, and many rental companies do not allow unpaved roads. So ask in advance, or leave the car and take the boat from Kissamos.
On Rhodes, Corfu and Kos the main roads are good too, but beyond them roads quickly become narrow and steep. A compact car is then more comfortable than a large SUV. On the mainland you usually pick up the car in Athens or Thessaloniki. From Athens airport you drive on the Attiki Odos, a toll road around the city. Great trips from Athens are Delphi (about two and a half hours' drive), the Peloponnese with Nafplio (about two hours) and the monasteries of Meteora (about four hours). Parking in central Athens is difficult, so it is better not to drive into the centre.
Want to take the car to another island? Most rental companies only allow it with permission in advance, often for a surcharge. Without permission you are usually not insured on the boat or on the other island. Mention your plans in your request and we will include them in your quote.
Outside the larger towns petrol stations are scarce, and some close early in the evening. So fill up in good time, especially before a drive through the mountains. Unleaded petrol is called "amolyvdi".
