Since 2020 and 2021 many Spanish toll roads have become free, such as the AP-7 along the Costa Blanca and the Costa Brava. So from Alicante via Valencia and Barcelona to the French border you no longer pay tolls.
Around Malaga you do pay. The AP-7 from Malaga to Estepona and Guadiaro is a toll road, with higher rates in summer and around Easter. The free A-7 runs right next to it, but it is busier and slower. There are also a few toll roads left around Madrid.
At a toll gate you pay by credit card or in cash. Avoid the lanes marked "Telepeaje" or "Vía T" unless your rental car has a toll device.
Large Spanish cities have a low-emission zone (ZBE). A rental car is usually new and carries the environmental label of the DGT, so you can drive into most zones as normal. The exception is the historic centre of Madrid. With a regular petrol or diesel car you may only go in to park in a public car park. A hybrid or electric car gives you more freedom.
On the islands it is easiest to pick up your car at the airport. Most rental companies do not let you take the car on a ferry to another island, or only with permission in advance. Island hopping? Then arrange a car on each island.
Tenerife has two airports: Tenerife South near the resorts in the south and Tenerife North near Puerto de la Cruz and La Laguna. In the mountains of Tenerife and Mallorca you drive narrow hairpin bends, for example to Masca or Sa Calobra. A small car is the most comfortable there.
Demand in Spain is highest in July, August and around Easter. If you leave it late, you have less choice and pay more, especially for an automatic. So request your quote well in advance.
