What to know about renting a car in Canada
The rules that differ from home, in one place. Open whatever is relevant to you.
Which driving licence do I need in Canada?
Your European driving licence is valid in most provinces for a stay of up to three months. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not compulsory, but it is recommended: it is a translation of your licence that suppliers and police recognise immediately. Bring your passport as well; some suppliers also ask to see your flight ticket.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Canada?
With the suppliers we work with it is 21. Drivers aged 21 to 24 pay a young driver surcharge, around CAD 25 per day with the major suppliers in Toronto, and have a higher excess. From 25 that no longer applies.
How does the deposit and the credit card work?
At pick-up the supplier blocks a deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name. For an SUV in Toronto that is around CAD 800; the exact amount depends on the car and the location. Only genuine credit cards are accepted (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club): no debit card, no prepaid card and no cash. If anything is charged to your deposit after damage, we refund it within 30 days.
Am I fully insured?
Yes. Liability, damage (CDW), theft and fire are included as standard, with unlimited mileage. We have bought off the excess for you: damage to windows, tyres, wheels, roof and underbody, which suppliers in Canada normally exclude, is covered with us. So are roadside assistance and towing. You do not need to buy any extra cover at the counter.
Are there toll roads in Canada?
Few. The best known is the 407 ETR around Toronto: no toll booths, but number plate registration. The bill goes to the supplier, who passes it on to you with administration costs. To avoid it, take the free 401 or switch off toll roads in your navigation. The Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island is also tolled. Beyond that, virtually every motorway is free.
What should I know about traffic rules and distances?
Speeds are in kilometres: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 on rural roads, 100 on motorways and up to 110-120 on parts of the Trans-Canada Highway. Turning right on red is allowed after a full stop, except on the island of Montreal. When a yellow school bus stops with its lights flashing, traffic in both directions must stop; fines start at CAD 400. Holding a phone is banned everywhere. In remote areas petrol stations can be 200 km apart: fill up at every opportunity. At sunrise and dusk, watch for moose and deer.
Can I take the rental car into the United States?
Only on request. The supplier has to give permission in advance and charges a surcharge or extra insurance for it. Tell us when you send your request and we arrange it beforehand, so you are not turned back at the border. Without permission your cover lapses the moment you cross.
When is the best time to go, and what about winter tyres?
June to September is high season: every road and park is open and prices are at their highest. May and October are quieter and cheaper; in the Rocky Mountains it can already be snowing. In Quebec winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 15 March, rental cars included. Suppliers charge for them (around CAD 320 per rental in Toronto) and may also require them in other provinces in winter. If you are travelling in winter, tell us when you send your request.
Common mistakes you will not make with SunnVio
- Buying extra insurance at the counter. Suppliers in Canada actively sell additional cover. With us it is unnecessary: everything is already covered.
- Turning up with a debit card. Without a credit card in the driver's name you will not get the car and the booking counts as a no-show.
- Driving the 407 ETR. The toll bill plus the supplier's administration costs arrives weeks later. Switch off toll roads in your navigation.
- Crossing the border without permission. That voids your cover. We arrange permission in advance.
- Not returning the tank full. Full-to-full is the rule; under 125 kilometres driven, the supplier will want to see the fuel receipt.
