Tolls and vignettes in Europe: how to pay with a rental car and avoid fines

Every European country handles road tolls its own way: one with a sticker on the windscreen, another with a gate halfway down the motorway. Know how it works before you go and you drive on stress-free – and without an unexpected fine on your credit card. This guide lines up the systems.

Two systems: toll per trip or vignette per period

Broadly, there are two ways to pay for motorway use in Europe. With a vignette you buy in advance the right to drive freely for a set period – often a sticker on the windscreen, but increasingly digital and linked to your number plate. With toll per trip you pay based on distance: you take a ticket at the entry and settle at the exit, or you pass automatic gates that read your plate. Which system applies depends on the country you drive in. Cross into a border region and you may deal with both on a single trip.

Vignette countries: buy in advance, mostly digital

Countries such as Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary use a vignette. You buy it per day, week, month or year. Important for a rental car: the classic sticker is increasingly giving way to a digital vignette linked to the number plate. If you buy one, use the exact plate of your rental car and buy from an official source (the national road authority or approved outlets), not from an expensive reseller. In Switzerland, take extra care: an annual vignette is often still the norm, even if you only stay a few days. Never enter the motorway without a valid vignette – fines are steep and collected on the spot.

Toll countries: gates and tickets

France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Greece charge tolls by distance driven. You often take a ticket at the entry and pay at the exit by card, cash or a toll pass. At the toll plazas, watch the lane carefully: lanes with a blue t sign (Telepeaje/Télépéage/Telepass) are only for subscribers with a transponder – do not queue there in a rental car without a device, or you will get stuck. Choose the lane with the card or coin symbol. Always keep some coins and a credit card handy, as not every machine accepts every foreign card.

Watch out in Portugal: invisible electronic tolls

Portugal deserves a separate warning. Part of the motorway network (the so-called ex-SCUT roads) has no toll plazas: cameras simply read your plate and the toll is settled afterwards. Without preparation, that bill – plus charges – is later passed to you via the rental company. That is why rental companies often offer an electronic toll device (transponder) that charges the toll automatically, usually at a daily rate plus the actual toll cost. When you pick up the car, ask explicitly whether it has such a device and how it will be billed, so you are not caught out.

Fines arrive later – and here is how to avoid them

Drive through a toll gate without paying, or without a valid vignette, and it will not simply disappear. The offence is linked to your booking and the rental company charges the fine plus an administration fee to your credit card, sometimes months after your trip. Avoid this with a simple routine: check in advance which system applies at your destination(s), buy your vignette from an official source with the correct plate, and ask about a toll device at pick-up if you are driving through Portugal or on many toll roads.
