Car rental in France: tolls, vignette and speed limits
France is a wonderful country to drive, but expect tolls and watch for the environmental sticker in big cities. Here's what you need to know.
Péage: tolls on the motorway
French autoroutes are largely toll. You can pay by card at the toll booth. Expect a few tens of euros for longer distances; via secondary roads (Route Nationale) you drive for free but slower.
Crit'Air environmental sticker
In cities such as Paris, Lyon and Grenoble you often need a Crit'Air sticker to enter the low-emission zone. Ask at pick-up whether the car already has one; if not, ask us in advance.
Speed and rules
On the motorway the limit is 130 km/h (110 in rain). Note: lower limits apply in fog or rain. A warning triangle and a safety vest are mandatory on board.
