The rental desks at Faro Airport are in and right next to the arrivals hall; some companies use a shuttle to a lot a few minutes away. Bring your driving licence, passport or ID, voucher and a credit card in the main driver's name.
Albufeira is about 45 km, Portimão about 65 km and Lagos about 90 km — fast via the A22, a bit slower via the free N125. Eastwards lie Tavira (approx. 40 km) and the Spanish border (approx. 55 km). Since 2025 the A22 (Via do Infante) is toll-free; older guidebooks still mention tolls.
The Algarve is hugely popular: for July and August, the earlier you book the sharper the price. Watch the blue parking zones in resort towns; most big beaches have free parking. The fuel policy is full-to-full — top up just before returning.
