Do you need a credit card for a rental car?

Almost every rental company asks for a credit card at pick-up — and that is exactly where many travellers get caught out. Here is how the credit card, the deposit and the alternatives really work.

Why rental companies require a credit card

At pick-up, the rental company reserves a deposit on your credit card, usually between €1,000 and €1,500 depending on the car class. This is a hold, not a payment: the amount is only blocked and is automatically released after you return the car undamaged. A credit card makes this possible without money actually leaving your account — which is exactly why rental desks insist on one.

What the credit card must meet

• In the main driver's name — the name on the card must match the driving licence exactly.
• A real credit card (Visa or Mastercard) issued by a bank. Prepaid cards, virtual cards and most debit cards are refused.
• Sufficient available limit for the deposit — check your limit before travelling and raise it temporarily via your bank if needed.
• Valid for at least 3 more months after your rental ends.

Debit card, Apple Pay or prepaid: will that work?

Usually not. Some rental companies now accept debit cards, but often only on more expensive packages, with extra conditions or a higher deposit. Apple Pay/Google Pay and prepaid cards are almost never accepted at the desk, because no deposit can be reserved on them. Don't count on it — tell us in advance and we will find out what is possible at your destination.

No credit card? These are your options

One: apply for a credit card at your own bank — allow one to two weeks, so arrange it well before departure. Two: make a travelling companion who does have a credit card the main driver; the card must be in the main driver's name. Three: mention it in your request — we know the conditions per rental company and destination and can see straight away where a debit card or alternative is accepted.

Deposit and excess: how they relate

Many people confuse the deposit with the excess. The deposit is a temporary hold you always get back when returning the car undamaged. The excess is the amount that can be charged from that deposit in case of damage. With SunnVio the excess is fully bought off: if anything is charged, we refund it in full within 30 days. On balance you pay €0 — the credit card is only needed for the hold itself.
