The palace of Knossos is about 10 km away, resort Chersonissos about 30 km and Rethymnon about 80 km via the northern highway. Elafonisi beach in the south-west is a day trip (approx. 200 km). All roads on Crete are toll-free.
The northern highway (VOE) is fine; roads to the south coast are winding and sometimes steep — beautiful, but allow extra time. Don't leave refuelling too late on Sundays: small village pumps may be closed. Follow the signs at beaches and gorges for parking.
The main roads are good and calm. In the mountains and towards the south coast roads get winding and sometimes narrow; with a compact car and a little patience it is perfectly doable — and the views are the reward.
Yes, all of Crete is freely drivable and toll-free. Chania is about 140 km (2 hours), Elafonisi about 200 km — a full day trip.
No, rental cars are not allowed on ferries without the company's permission. For island hopping, renting per island is nearly always more practical and cheaper — just ask us.
