Renting a car on the Greek islands: what you need to know

A rental car is the handiest way to see everything on most Greek islands. Just keep in mind narrow roads and limited parking.

Which car to choose?

On islands like Crete, Rhodes and Kefalonia roads are often narrow and steep. A small or compact car is nimble and economical. Travelling with family and luggage? Then choose something roomier.

Roads and driving

Outside the tourist spots you may encounter unpaved stretches and goats on the road. Drive calmly, especially in the mountains. A car with air conditioning is no luxury in summer.

Ferries between islands

Want to take the car on the ferry to another island? That's often possible, but book well in advance and check whether your rental contract allows it. Sometimes renting a car per island is cheaper.
