The golden rule: 2 to 6 months ahead
Rental companies use dynamic pricing: the fewer cars available, the higher the price. For high season (July/August) that means: book between February and April and you often pay far less than someone deciding in June. Over a two-week holiday rental the difference quickly adds up to hundreds of euros. For May, June and September, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually enough; for the summer holidays, the earlier the better.

January–March: the cheapest months to book for summer. Full choice, keen prices.
April–May: summer prices start climbing; still a good moment.

July–August: booking for immediate departure is at its most expensive — sometimes two to three times the early-bird price.
October–December: low season; last-minute is often affordable then.

- Rent in full days and watch your times. Rentals are charged per 24 hours. Picking up at 10:00 and returning at 14:00 means paying an extra day for four hours.
- Large airports are often cheaper than small stations or city-centre offices: more supply means more competition.
