Family road trip: child seats in the rental car

On holiday with kids and a rental car? Then the child seat is something to arrange before you travel — not at the desk. The rules, the costs and the smart choices.

What does the law say at your destination?

Across the EU, children shorter than 1.35 m (1.50 m in some countries) must be in an approved child seat or on a booster. Police at holiday destinations actively check, and fines are steep. As the driver, you are responsible — also in a rental car.

Option 1: rent the seat with the car

Every rental company offers child seats (infant seat, toddler seat or booster). Convenient, as you carry nothing. The downsides: it often costs €5 to €10 per day (so €70–€140 per seat over two weeks), you don't know the quality or age of the seat in advance, and very occasionally the reserved seat isn't available on arrival. Always reserve in advance — mention it in your request and we include the exact price in your quote.

Option 2: bring your own seat on the plane

With nearly all airlines (KLM, Transavia, TUI, Ryanair, easyJet) a child seat and/or pushchair flies free as hold luggage with a child booking. You know your own seat, it fits your child perfectly and it costs nothing extra. Downside: lugging it through the airport and a risk of transport damage — pack it in a sturdy bag or box.

What's the smart call?

• Babies and toddlers: bringing your own seat nearly always wins — familiar, free on the plane and guaranteed quality.
• Booster-age children: an approved inflatable or foldable travel booster (from about €30) fits in your suitcase and saves the rental fee entirely.
• Short trip or many connections: renting at the desk is most convenient; just include the cost in your comparison upfront.

What to check at pick-up

Always inspect a rented seat: is it complete and undamaged, does the size match your child's weight, and install it yourself (or watch critically) — the desk clerk is no fitter. Isofix is in virtually every modern rental car; do ask. And during your walk-around of the car, check the rear seatbelts too.

Think all-in: the whole family

Travelling with the whole family? Choose a car with room for suitcases and kids' gear — a compact SUV or estate is often only slightly dearer than a cramped mid-size. State your family setup and preferences in the form; we calculate everything all-in, including seats if you want to rent them.
